Contract Value:
$1.7M

LOCATION: East Lansing, MI

CLIENT: Granger Construction Company

PROJECT/SITE SIZE: 20,320 SF Addition

Central Excavating delivered a $1.7 million sitework and excavation package for Michigan State University's Combined Heat & Power Unit Addition at the T.B. Simon Power Plant, performing mass excavation, building pad preparation, foundation excavation, underground utility installation and site logistics coordination for the new 20,320-square-foot energy facility. Working through severe winter conditions, limited site access and active campus operations, the team successfully executed complex excavation activities around existing concrete piers and critical gas utility infrastructure while maintaining safe and efficient construction progress.

When poor subsurface conditions were encountered during excavation of a 17-foot-deep blowdown sump foundation, Central implemented a slide rail shoring system to safely support the excavation and maintain production. Through proactive planning, innovative material handling solutions and close coordination with concrete, electrical and plumbing contractors, the team successfully navigated challenging site constraints and helped keep this technically demanding infrastructure project on schedule.

UNIQUE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Active Campus Environment

  • Limited Site Access

  • Mass excavation (~23,000 cubic yards)

  • Building pad preparation

  • Foundation excavation

  • Underground utility work

  • Excavation & Backfill for Duct Banks (8’ W x 4” Tall – 10’ Deep)

  • Excavation & Backfill for Plumbers

  • Utilizing Quick Shoring System Inside Building Between Concrete Piers to Install UG Electrical & Plumbing.

  • Excavation Around Existing, High Importance

  • Gas Main Utilities

  • Given the tight jobsite, extensive pile cap/footing layout, UG electrical, & UG plumbing, CE utilized cross’s tele belt truck to place sand inside the building for SOG prep.

Michigan State University
Student Recreation & Wellness Center

LOCATION: East Lansing, MI

CLIENT: Granger Construction Company

PROJECT/SITE SIZE: 10 Acres

Central Excavating delivered a 10-acre site development package for Michigan State University's 293,000-square-foot Student Recreation & Wellness Center, performing mass excavation, site grading, underground utilities, foundation preparation, and deep natatorium excavation. Working within an active campus and complex multi-contractor environment, the team utilized GPS-guided equipment and innovative excavation methods to execute challenging below-grade work, including excavation up to 18 feet deep within a partially enclosed structure.

When the addition of a natatorium and competition pool introduced significant new excavation scope after construction was already underway, Central quickly adapted its sequencing and logistics plans, successfully completing the work while maintaining construction momentum, supporting critical project milestones, and helping keep the overall project on schedule.

UNIQUE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mass excavation

  • Site grading

  • Foundation preparation

  • Underground utility installation

  • Deep natatorium excavation

  • Backfill operations

  • Large underground detention systems (84", 66"  & 42" diameter)

  • Storm, sanitary, and watermain utility work (2,500 linear ft. storm sewer & storm manhole/catch basin - 24 EA)

Tecumseh River Rd.
Pump Station Improvements

LOCATION: Lansing, MI

CLIENT: City of Lansing

PROJECT/SITE SIZE: ~1.5 acres force main - pumpstation side

~ 1/3 mile of utility install/road reconstruction - main side

The City of Lansing is advancing a Wet Weather Control Program (WWCP) project that includes construction of a new pump station at Tecumseh Park. The project features a cast-in-place structure located adjacent to the Grand River, incorporating a dual-chamber wet/dry well and five existing pumps, including three wet weather pumps and two dry weather pumps. Work also includes replacement of the force main connecting the new Tecumseh River Road Pump Station to the Lansing Wastewater Treatment Plant, along with equipment upgrades at the Wastewater Treatment Plant Screening Building. Designed to support long-term water quality improvements in both the Grand and Red Cedar Rivers, the project is a critical component in reducing combined sewer overflows and maintaining the integrity of the region's wastewater infrastructure.

Facing a constrained earth retention footprint, a 30-foot-deep excavation, and specialized ERS load surcharge restrictions, the project team developed unique excavation approaches that required careful equipment selection and innovative double-handling methods not typically encountered on conventional excavation projects. Granger is performing the concrete and earthwork scopes, helping deliver this essential infrastructure improvement.

UNIQUE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Construction of a new river-adjacent pump station

  • Cast-in-place dual-chamber wet/dry well structure

  • Force main replacement to the Lansing Wastewater Treatment Plant (1,700 linear ft. - 16" diameter)

  • Wastewater Treatment Plant screening equipment upgrades

  • Dewatering and mass excavating (30 ft. deep inside the ERS system)

  • Earth retention system (ERS) surcharge-restricted excavation

  • Innovative double-handling excavation methods

  • Water quality improvements for the Grand and Red Cedar Rivers

Tower on Grand

LOCATION: Lansing, MI

CLIENT:  The Christman Company

PROJECT/SITE SIZE: .5 Acres

Central Excavating delivered a $1.3 million excavation and site development package for the Tower on Grand, a 28-story mixed-use development in downtown Lansing that will become the city's tallest building. Working within a highly constrained urban site adjacent to the Grand River, the team performed deep foundation excavation, utility installation and backfill operations in support of the project's critical underground and foundation systems. The limited footprint, restricted laydown area and extensive subsurface infrastructure required detailed planning, precise execution and continuous coordination with project partners to safely and efficiently complete the work.

Central Excavating successfully navigated complex excavation activities around deep foundation elements and exposed reinforcing steel, ensuring protection of critical structural components while maintaining construction progress. Through proactive logistics management and close collaboration with the project team, Central helped position the project for successful vertical construction and the next phase of development.

UNIQUE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Deep Foundation Excavation

  • Small Confined Site

  • Downtown Lansing with limited laydown area
